Every year we are pleased to offer a rare opportunity to gain excellent practical experience at our fabulous wetland sites by offering a number of interesting placements.

These volunteer opportunities are ideal for students currently on an undergraduate degree course who are looking for a sandwich year. However they are also open to graduates or non-students who are looking to gain practical experience. Most of our placements are for 12 months but some shorter placements are also sometimes available.

Applications for placements starting in August 2022 are now open. Role descriptions for the placements that we have available are given below along with an application form. Completed application forms must be submitted by Sunday 27 February, interviews will be held from mid-March.

Reserves Placements

Our amazing sites all have areas of natural habitat that we manage to maximise the benefits for wetland species. We are fortunate to be able to offer placements with our Reserve Teams at most of our sites giving an immersive practical experience, ideal for those looking to a career in reserve management or wetland conservation. All of our reserves are unique and so each site will offer a slightly different range of opportunities to their placement. A summary for each location can be found below along with the role description and application form. Please read these and consider the opportunities at each of our sites carefully before indicating on the application form which role/s you would like to apply for.

Living Collection Placements

We have roles available at our Slimbridge (Gloucestershire) and Arundel (West Sussex) centres for those looking to gain practical experience in different areas of animal husbandry and management. These full-time placements are a great opportunity for people looking for experience in these areas. The species at each site vary and therefore the experience offered to the placement is different for each centre, so please read the role descriptions carefully and indicate on the application form which placement/s you are interest in.

Included is a 6-month role at our new Living Wetland Theatre exhibit at our Slimbridge (Gloucestershire) centre. This unique role also includes the opportunity to develop animal training skills as well as presentation skills.
